Branding and Internet Terminology

What is branding?

Branding is the process of developing an emotional connection between the name of a product or service and the intended audience, in a way that is cohesive, creative, and consistent. Branding goes beyond logos, though a good logo can be an important starting place. For branding analysis, tips, and even fun comics, visit our blog, Talking Oranges.

What is an avatar?

An avatar, sometimes called a profile picture, is an image or icon that you select to represent yourself for your social media accounts. Usually it is a small square. In today’s Internet-dominated world, it’s important to consider how well your logo might work as an avatar, since that might be the only visual representation of your identity allowed in some instances.

What is the difference between a website and a webpage?

A website is comprised of at least one webpage. A website may have just a home page, or it may have many other internal webpages in addition to the home page.

What is the difference between website hosting, domain names, and URLs?

Check out our explanation of the difference between these three items in this post on our blog, Talking Oranges.

What is the difference between SEO and SEM?

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the process of optimizing your website so that it is found easily by search engines and thus by users in unpaid, organic (or “natural”) search results. SEM, or search engine marketing, is paid advertising that appears next to or above unpaid search results. SEO tends to require more technical expertise and produce results much more slowly, but with SEM, you must pay for the traffic to your website that results from your advertisements. Ultimately the goal of both SEO and SEM is to promote online traffic and increase brand awareness. We recommend that our clients use both SEO and SEM strategies.

What is pay-per-click advertising (PPC)?

Pay-per-click advertising, such as Google AdWords, is a form of search engine marketing (SEM). As the name suggests, you pay when Internet users click on your ad, rather than when your ad is displayed.
